The Right Way To Get The Commercial Driver License

By Walter Kennedy

Driving a huge truck is at a different level of difficulty when compared to operating a regular sized vehicle. There are many reasons why one would like to learn how to drive anything weighing 26,001 pounds and beyond. The qualifications are simple but there are still documents and exams to pass.

Laws regarding the procurement of this permit vary from one state to another. Commercial driver license NJ qualifications may be different from the qualifications in CA. For example in New Jersey, a CDL is required to drive a limo, or a van for hire that can transport eight to ten people. Some states do not have that requirement.

The basic requirement for a CDL applicant is at least 18 years old. This only applies if they plan to drive around the state. Interstate CDL requires someone to be at least 21 years old. The candidate must already have a class D drivers license . Also they should be able to recognize red, green and amber colors.

Payment is required in different stages of certification. Make sure to identify or at least estimate the total amount that needs to be paid before going through the application. Leave some leg room for extra practice classes, they might come in handy. Even after getting the official permit, endorsement may still need payment.

The person applying has to study a handbook exclusively for commercial driving applicants. This book contains the information that is needed to pass the knowledge test. There is usually a PDF file for the handbook provided in the state website.

All personal information needed for the six point ID verification process should be prepared. This includes information like the social security number. Once all the necessary legal information is already on hand, the applicant can now head to the Motor Vehicle Commission Agency. An application form will be provided and then submitted after the required information is filled out.

If the candidate passes his knowledge test, he is now eligible for their CDL learners permit or the CLP. This allows CLP holder to practice driving the vehicle they want licensure for. There are classes A, B, and C for CDL holders. Identifying which class the potential license holder belongs to is dependent on the vehicle they plan to handle.

Restriction are attached to the learners permit. The permit is only for a limited time, 180 days for New Jersey. Permit holders are only allowed to practice on public roads while carrying the class D license. The CLP holder also needs to have a person with the full CDL with them. The candidate will have to wait 20 days before they can take the road test. It is best to consider taking a training course during this period.

The applicant can schedule the final road test once they are prepared to take it. Some states, like New Jersey, allow online scheduling for the test while other states others do not. Once the candidate has passed the road test they can now claim their official permit at the MVC agency.
