Steps On How To Build Street Rod Frames

By Carl Brooks

Street rods are types of cars that are old and these are being manufactured with increased performances. Cars that are newly manufactured are not installed with cadillac engines so that its speed will be faster and also to outperform the older hot rods. Automakers who have manufactured the cars would prefer to offer fuel efficiency and safety than performance.

Like the processes that are involved in building structures, to build the car frames is never different. So the purpose of this article is to provide the very easy steps to build the street rod frames. Three primary materials which are needed include sand blaster, air tools, and either steel tubing or frames. But before you can start on performing the process, make sure that you have acquired a basic knowledge on hand tools and mechanical things.

Many companies have been offering nowadays a complete chassis package to be used in assembling easily. There are old cars having rusty chassis. Having this can make it easier for you to perform the following steps. But before moving on to the steps, decide first if what will be the rod type that you will build. You may utilize the generic frames or those other kinds of bodies if you have the low amount of budget.

So after you have decided on the rod, be ready now with the frame or the steel tubing. The generic frames will need more work since these are needed to be modified first. Those brackets and mounts that will not be used should be cut off then disassemble the rear axle assembly and front suspension. Measure all the sides and check if it is a square.

If it happens that you can notice and see that there are weak points, you must immediately weld it. The cross members in the front and rear should be welded as well. Frame boxing is very common to most builders. Boxing is the process of welding the steel plates that have flat surfaces. The plates are the entire length of frame from the edge opening inside. A steel tubing that has a rectangular shape does not need boxing.

If you wish to have the front suspension which is working really well, purchase the kit of front suspension. If you already have decided on the suspension, you mount it under the cross members at the front in suicide style. Suicide style is utilized in lowering a car more. A steering box turns pitman arm and this arm will be pushing the tie rod in a back and forth manner. Check if the box is properly mounted having the correct angles.

To install a rear suspension can be done easily. The suspension need springs and also other materials for holding it in position. Leaf springs are the very common types but may not possibly work to some types of vehicles like the early and small ones.

If chassis is installed already with 4 wheels, start to fit the body then sort out the sitting position. Then next is mounting the engine. There are a lot of types for the mounts which may be used. Side pedestal is the easiest type. Front cradles may be used as well but these need to be support in the center. A transmission will need the cross members which are bolted in.

Once the engine is mounted, focus on the gas, the clutch pedal, and the brake details. Then next is you decide to where the mounting will take place either underneath floorboards or on firewalls. If mounted underneath, frame brackets must be welded.
