Special Care Is Required For Successful Yacht Delivery

By Jeffrey Murphy

People who own super or mega yachts live in a world most of us will never know. It is a world filled with luxury, opulence, and sometimes excess. Objects of art, designer fashions, exotic cars, multiple homes, and world travel are often taken for granted by people who can easily afford them. When they require yacht delivery, an employee usually makes the arrangements. Some of us do not even know when a boat becomes a mega yacht.

Whether or not boats are considered mega yachts or not depends mostly on their size. The word comes from the Dutch and was originally meant for boats that were fast and light enough to catch pirates. Smaller luxury boats are usually referred to as cabin cruisers even though they may be as unique as their larger cousins. Today we generally think of yachts as luxury seagoing vessels owned by people we read about in magazines.

People who build one of a kind vessels usually work with a team that includes naval architects and interior designers. These professionals have already met and extensively discussed the particulars of the process with the future owners before any building begins. This way everyone can be comfortable that when the product is delivered, it is everything the purchasers expected.

Boat dealerships usually handle less unique inventory. They are more mass marketing oriented. The products they have to offer and deliver to new owners may be custom designed and built with the best materials available however.

Very often delivery of these huge vessels requires traveling in international waters where all international maritime laws apply. The companies entrusted with their safe and speedy conveyance must clearly understand and comply with the laws so as not to endanger or hinder the arrival of someone's precious new possession. Of course one must have the correct insurance in place in case inclement weather damages the vessel in any way.

The captain at the helm of this precision craft must be a seasoned veteran with the skill and knowledge required to successfully pilot the vessel to its final destination. The crew must know exactly what is expected of him or her and be able to carry out the commands given by the skipper. As an owner, it will be your responsibility to make sure the people in charge of your yacht are fully qualified.

Many builders, dealerships, and skippers encourage the new owners to travel with them as they deliver the vessel to its final destination. This is a great way for individuals to get a feel for the property they have purchased and feel comfortable that everything is exactly as they imagined. It is also a good time for them to address any questions or concerns they might have.

Most of us will never know what it is like to have a boat as long as a football field and as opulent as a king's castle. For those lucky enough to own a floating mansion, getting it safely and successfully delivered is of utmost importance.
