Steps To Making Your Hot Rod Frames

By Thomas Reynolds

At the mention of hot rods, what most individuals will think of are the modified motor vehicles. Their speeds are increased. They are unique and represent the designer's taste. If you want to make a frame for yourself, ensure that you get the necessary equipment. Apart from this, you need a lot of motivation. This is the most valuable tool to have. It is best that you have other people helping you as this is not a simple task. The article provides steps to making hot rod frames.

Keep thinking of triangles. Each truck frame is triangles that have cross members. They are usually across to carry the weight. They provide support to the structure. Therefore, they will not flex or twist to a state one cannot repair. Triangles tend to withstand a lot of force. You can only deform them by stretching its sides, and this is not easy.

You need to consider the cost you will incur. You may own a welder. This already helps to save a lot in your budget. Examine the prices of the other tools like the grinders, cutters, and consumables. You may also need to consider the cost of gas, electricity, and labor. When doing this project, you may find that you spend a lot of time away from your loved ones.

You may at some level just opt to buy this frame. Doing this then means that you would have followed the set rules. You can get the information on the charges you will incur when tilting a new frame. You get this information from the local police department and the DMV. The rules will not be the same in all states. Therefore, you should be aware of the rules in your state.

The first step is removing the cab, engine back end and front end. You need to remove all the parts attached to this frame. Then you should remove the rusty areas. This will help you get your frame on that frame table. You may not need to have a frame table to complete this task. However, it makes this process faster. You will not wait for the frame to cool off as you weld.

Place the frame on your frame table. The next thing is making short work of those rivets by using a torch and an air hammer. A factory cross member is not necessary when you are building your crossbrasing. You should use a strap to help in the binding of the frame wall found inside. The strap should be of a certain thickness.

Make boxing plates for the frame rails. Ensure that they match the rails. Mark the boxing plates to match the truss made. After doing this, then you can put everything together. At this point, you can install the engine and transmission. Install the exhaust to ensure the K-member is not in its way. Try to find the perfect place to fit the K-member.

Your K-member is only functional when it in support of the upper and lower sections of the frame. Place the transmission to where it was originally located. Weld the joints that you could not get to. Welding will be simpler when you flip the frame. This way, you can also fill the holes that were under your frame. These welds need to be flattened. Grind your finished frame then paint the color you would love.
