Benefits And Advantages Of Remanufactured Engines

By Timothy Burns

Remanufacturing is the process of rebuilding products according to the original specifications. It is a combination of reusing, repairing, or using new parts. It is required to replace the components or parts that are already damaged and which are also subject for degradation. Remanufacturing is considered to be one of the forms in product recovery. And because of this, remanufactured products are expected to be exactly the same as the new product.

In this process, products are being restored as to a like new condition through a series of many industrial processes. First, products are disassembled and some reusable parts will be cleaned. Products are then reassembled from the old parts and is expected to be like the original new product. The range of products that are being manufactured includes air conditioning units, compressors, any equipment and machines, musical instruments, robots, and as well remanufactured engines.

There are four main benefits when remanufacturing engines. First is having a lower cost. These can be one of the important factors that affects engine remanufacturing. These engines costs fifty percent less when being compared to new Tier 4 engine. The maintenance for Tier 4 types can be very costly.

Second is less downtime. When you decide on replacing an old engine, it may require significant engineering time and it may possibly provide rental equipment that is out of service for a few months. The processes of integrating and testing a new Tier 4 engine takes longer compared to remanufactured ones.

Third is increased resale value. The availability and the serviceability of it are two factors for difficult selling of a Tier 4 equipment. There may be countries who are less regulated, thus, not acquiring technologies that support these type of products. Also, they do not have low sulfur diesel fuel which is required for its operation.

Fourth, sustainability. Purchasing an engine that was rebuilt is a great contribution for helping in the reduction of impact of waste to the environment. Utilizing the recycled components and parts will lessen the energy used since it only uses 80 percent of it compared to a new product.

Product recovery has also some forms which include repair, reuse, reconditioning or refurbishing, cannibalization, and recycling. Reuse is the process of using an item for a lot of times. Its advantages include saving raw materials and energy, reducing the disposal costs and needs, cost savings for both consumers and businesses, and older items are better handcrafted.

Repair would involve fixing any devices, it maybe mechanical, electrical, or plumbing. Another term for this is scheduled maintenance in which there is a routine actions which is being performed in order to keep it in a working order. These actions involve all combinations of technical, managerial, administrative, and supervision actions.

Recycling is a process of converting waste materials into reusable objects. This prevents waste and also reducing the consumption of the raw materials, water and air pollution, and energy. Cannibalization is the removing of parts from similar devices and installing it to one device for proper functioning. This is done when no spare parts can be provided.
